Miners in the Snow - by Vincent van Gogh
This drawing, Miners in the Snow, was created in Sep 1880, Etten and is one of Van Gogh's earliest work. This is created using pencil, chalk and watercolor on paper.
In this drawing he used quite a large format, and he became so accustomed to this that he continued to use it later for drawing from life. None of his copies has survived, because he destroyed them when his artistic skills improved. In his first few months of practice Van Gogh also made a few independent drawings, of which only one is known through a sketch of it in a letter: a rather crude depiction of miners in the snow.
